Mushrooms 101 is where to start if you're new to mushroom products. It covers, in plain language, what Purely Found carries, how the formats differ, and what to look at on a label before you buy. It stays short on purpose. There's a longer guide linked at the end for anyone who wants more.
The mushrooms we carry
Purely Found carries two categories of mushroom products. They are not the same thing, and once you know the difference, shopping gets a lot easier.
Amanita muscaria. This is the red-capped, white-spotted mushroom many people recognize from folklore. It has a long history of traditional use in parts of Siberia and northern Europe, where it was prepared and consumed in seasonal and ceremonial settings. Amanita muscaria is psychoactive. It is not a psychedelic, and its active compounds belong to a different chemical group entirely. Modern research is still early, so most of what's known comes from traditional use and from what people report, rather than from settled science. Preparation matters here. Raw Amanita is not something to eat casually, which is why the products we carry are processed and lab tested. Amanita muscaria is for adults 21+ only. We carry it dried, as gummies, in capsules, and as powder.
Mushroom blends. Our mushroom blends come as gummies and chocolates. A blend combines more than one mushroom species in a single serving, sometimes with other botanicals, and the mix varies from product to product. These are generally gentler, everyday-style products, and many people choose them as a low-key way to build a routine. Because "blend" can mean a lot of things, the label is where you'll find what's actually inside. A mushroom blend is not an Amanita product unless the label says so.
Formats at a glance
Format changes two things: how convenient a product is, and how consistent each serving will be.
- Dried Amanita is the most traditional format and the least processed. You handle preparation yourself, so serving size depends on your own measuring and on the cap itself. It suits experienced explorers who want full control.
- Amanita powder is easier to measure than whole dried caps, and it stirs into tea or food without much fuss. Consistency depends on how carefully you weigh each serving.
- Amanita capsules are pre-measured and portable, and they have no taste. Of the loose formats, they're the most consistent, and there's nothing to prepare.
- Gummies come in both Amanita and blend versions. They're pre-measured and easy to cut in half for a smaller start. Check the label for the amount per piece, since Amanita gummies and blend gummies are not the same.
- Chocolates are blend products only. Each square carries a clear amount, so portioning is simple. They suit people who'd rather not take something that tastes like a supplement.
A dried cap and a capsule may come from the same mushroom and still feel like very different experiences. When in doubt, pick the more pre-measured option first.
How to choose
- Read the label and the serving size. Look for the species named, the amount per serving, and how many servings are in the package. If a product doesn't clearly say what's in it, keep looking.
- Check the third-party lab result. Third-party lab results for the products we carry are posted on our Lab Results page. A lab result confirms the mushroom's identity and screens for contaminants. It's the clearest way to know a product contains what the label claims.
- Start low. Take less than a full serving, wait, and pay attention to how you feel before having more. This matters most with Amanita muscaria, where experiences vary a good deal from person to person. If you're pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or managing a health condition, talk with a qualified healthcare professional before trying any mushroom product.
Mushrooms 101 FAQ
What's the difference between a mushroom blend and Amanita muscaria?
A blend mixes several mushroom species into one gummy or chocolate and is generally a gentler, everyday product. Amanita muscaria is a single psychoactive species with a long traditional history, sold on its own and restricted to adults 21+. That's why they sit in separate categories on our site.
How do I know a gummy actually contains what it says?
Look up its third-party lab result on our Lab Results page. Reputable products name the species and the amount per piece, and the lab result is what backs that up.
How long before I notice anything?
Gummies, chocolates, and capsules pass through digestion first, so many people report waiting 30 to 90 minutes before feeling much of anything. Give it time before taking more. Taking a second serving too early is the most common beginner mistake.
Is Amanita muscaria legal where I live?
Laws around botanical and plant-based products vary by state and locality, and they change. You're responsible for knowing the rules in your area before you order.
